Should You Buy Travel Insurance Or Not?

What Is Travel Insurance?

The term travel insurance is commonly used to describe a few different types of insurance. It can sometimes be pretty confusing for new travellers.

You should know what kinds of coverage a travel insurance policy includes, because it may not include everything you think it does.

Travel Health Insurance is coverage for accidents, injuries, and hospital visits while you are away from home.

Medical Evacuation Insurance is coverage for transporting you to a major hospital for treatment.

Trip Cancelation Insurance is coverage for unexpected interruptions in your travel plans.

Baggage/Property Insurance is coverage for theft or damage to your gear while traveling.

Do You Need Travel Insurance?

This is the million-dollar question — and ultimately a personal decision. I’ve met plenty of people who travel without travel insurance and I’ve contemplated doing the same.

But after over 6 years of constant travel, hearing horror stories from other travelers, and getting into a few dangerous predicaments myself — if someone asks for my opinion on the subject I answer with:

YES. Everyone should carry some kind of health/property insurance when traveling.

Why? Because shit happens. Whether you think it will or not. Despite your best-laid plans and preventative measures. Sure, if you sprain your ankle, it might not be a big deal.

3 Tips to Buy the Right Type of Travel Insurance

6 November 2018 By admin Leave a Comment

Some travellers don’t need the level of coverage in a package plan – they need a travel medical plan instead – and they can avoid the extra expense that comes with a package plan. The following explains how to determine what type of travel insurance plan you need.

1. You need a travel medical plan when …

… your travel is domestic, relatively cheap, or outside your health insurance network.

Travel medical insurance plans cover your emergency medical care when you’re traveling outside your health insurance network. Many U.S. based health insurance plans do not cover their members when they leave the U.S. and they apply out-of-network charges for travel outside the health insurance network area, which means the traveler pays a higher portion of the bill.

Essentially, you need a travel medical plan when you’re not worried about recovering your non-refundable trip costs, your trip is relatively inexpensive, and you know you will be outside your health insurance network area (and therefore won’t have coverage for medical care).

2. You need a package plan when …

… your travel is expensive, once-in-a-lifetime, or you’re on a budget.

Travel insurance package plans cover a wide range of travel risks, including trip cancellation, travel interruption, emergency medical care, baggage loss, and evacuations as well as features like travel delays, car rental, and more. Cancellations can occur for a number of reasons, and when you want coverage for trip cancellation, you’ll need to buy a package plan.

You’ve Been Buying Travel Insurance All Wrong

25 October 2018 By admin Leave a Comment

The best way for frequent travelers to cover their getaways is an annual plan, something that is becoming more widely available from a number of providers. “Currently, we have a total of four annual plans and five single-trip plans,” says Richard Aquino, VP of Sales at Allianz Global Assistance. At the plan comparison site InsureMyTrip, sales of annual coverage have risen by 40 percent in the past year, the company says. And travel insurers Arch RoamRight and Seven Corners also report double-digit increases.

Travel agents are helping drive the shift. “I have recommended the annual policy for a few of my clients that travel very frequently throughout the year,” says Margie Hand, a travel agent at Andavo Travel. “One couple in particular usually took at least two luxury cruises per year, and together with their smaller trips, the annual policy was a great option for them.”

While annual and multi-trip plans are not new, traditionally they were marketed strictly to hard-core international travelers. “Most annual travel plans are focused on medical coverage for medical expenses and emergency medical evacuations,” says Justin Tysdal, CEO of Seven Corners.

Meanwhile, “for domestic trips, the number one reason somebody buys travel insurance is for trip-cancellation protection,” says Cory Sobczyk, VP of business development at Arch RoamRight. Historically, he says, “there have not been a ton of annual plans out there that include a trip-cancellation component.” But this paradigm is shifting, and today some insurance companies, including Arch RoamRight, now offer annual plans with trip cancellation that cover both domestic and international travel.

Save a pretty penny on travel insurance this summer with these top tips

2 October 2018 By admin Leave a Comment

Yet it is cheap and easy to get cover, which could save you thousands of pounds in medical bills should anything go wrong while away.

It also helps protect you against lost luggage and cancelled flights.

Sun Savers brings you top tips for travel insurance.

  • Buy as soon as you book. Travel insurance doesn’t just cover you while you are away, it protects you in case you can’t go on holiday. If you have to cancel, you should be covered for the cost of your trip.
  • Shop around. It’s not just about price but the level of cover. Insurance can cost as little as £5 for a single person or £10 if you are travelling as a family. Use comparison sites such as Compare The Market, which is currently offering two-for-one meals for a year at thousands of restaurants if you take out travel insurance with it.
  • Cheaper with more holidays. If you are going away twice this year and pay for two single-trip policies, it would cost £51.88 with Aviva. But getting annual cover would cost £42.18 from the same provider. Save even more money by using cashback sites. At TopCashback.co.uk you can get £15.75 back on annual travel policies with Aviva, and as much as £20.45 on policies with Virgin Money Travel.

Five important things to look for when buying travel insurance

25 September 2018 By admin Leave a Comment

Travel insurance is all about covering you for the unexpected, whether you’re cruising around the world, visiting your relatives in Australia or leisurely wandering through Europe’s capital cities.

1. What does it cover you for?

It ought to cover you for emergency medical treatment and repatriation, sudden cancellation or delayed transport, or being forced to cut your trip short. It should also cover you for lost, stolen or damaged baggage, though it is best to check if you want to name any specific valuables. Bear in mind that your age and medical history can often raise the premium significantly.

2. Do you need specialist cover?

Depending on where you’re going and what you’re doing, you may need to get additional cover – for example dangerous sports or activities, or travel to riskier destinations. Some insurers specialise in cover for older travellers, for example those that regularly take cruises. Telegraph Travel Insurance offers cover for people of all ages.* Remember to tell your insurer if you have any pre-existing medical conditions –  if not, you won’t be covered for treatment abroad if you get ill for that reason.

3. How often do you plan on travelling, and where?

If you travel a lot, annual, multi-trip cover can be the cheapest option, though think about whether you need worldwide or European cover. If you’re planning several months away at a time, long-stay insurance may be better.

4. Look at the small print

Cast your eyes over the detail; how do you submit a claim? How long does it take? Levels of cover and excess policies will vary. What happens if you have to cancel before you even leave? Getting your travel insurance as soon as you’ve got your travel confirmed can ensure you’re covered in case you need to make cancellations or amendments before you go.

3 Air Travel Nightmares That Travel Insurance Doesn’t Cover

30 August 2018 By admin Leave a Comment

Each day millions of travelers are navigating airports, filing through security lines and hoping to board their flight seamlessly. However, not every trip goes as planned. Leading travel insurance comparison site, Squaremouth, reviews three common air travel nightmares that travel insurance doesn’t cover.

The Neverending Security Line
While travelers may aim to arrive early, sometimes security lines can be long, especially during holidays and peak travel times. Missing a flight because of a long security line is not covered by travel insurance.

What can be covered: If a traveler misses their flight due to a traffic accident on the way to the airport there may be travel insurance coverage on some policies. Travel insurance providers will require official documentation of the accident during the claims process.

The Overbooked Flight
Often unbeknown to travelers, airlines overbook flights on a regular basis. If an airline ‘bumps’ a traveler from a flight because it’s full, they will often provide a voucher. However, a voucher for future travel doesn’t always help if a traveler has a connecting flight or cruise that they will miss. Any penalties incurred as a result of being bumped from an overbooked flight aren’t covered by travel insurance.

9 nightmares your travel insurance won’t cover

31 July 2018 By admin Leave a Comment

Travel insurance is designed to perform best in simple situations where you prepaid for vacation components. For example, trip cancellation: when you or a loved one gets sick or has an accident that prevents your travel; or trip interruption: when something happens to prevent you from reaching your destination or staying there.

Those kinds of travel insurance are good at getting back whatever money you can’t get back directly from the suppliers, and that’s enough for many travelers. But many problems that often arise fall around the edges of travel insurance policies, and may not be covered.

Squaremouth, a travel insurance comparison site, recently shared some “surprisingly common” nightmares that standard travel insurance often doesn’t cover. Squaremouth names three situations for each of the following categories: air travel, hotel stays, and on-the-ground bookings once you’ve arrived.

Here are potential travel insurance nightmares to be on the lookout for, and how you might be able to avoid or remedy it.

• Security delays: Travel insurance typically doesn’t cover you if you miss a plane due to excessively long lines at TSA. While those aren’t your fault, they also aren’t the fault of the airline. If you frequent busy airports, consider TSA Precheck where it’s available.

• Bumping: Insurance typically doesn’t cover downstream cancellation penalties if you’re bumped from a flight and miss a subsequent departure.

• Mileage flights: If your flight on a frequent-flier award ticket is canceled or otherwise impacted, insurance can’t replace or pay you for points. It may, however, cover the cost or re-deposit unused miles thereafter.

• Lost lodging reservations: A lost lodging reservation isn’t covered by travel insurance, and instead will have to be taken up with the company or travel agent that lost it.

Travel insurance – don’t leave home without it

19 July 2018 By admin Leave a Comment

While there are millions of people travelling abroad yearly, many of them are not properly secured should something happen on their travels. Vera Nagtegaal, Executive Head of Hippo.co.za provides some tips on travel insurance:

Do your research for cost-effective cover

A basic form of travel insurance is often provided by your bank when purchasing an air ticket using your credit card. But, be warned that this cover may not be sufficient as it often places caps on age, costs, services and certain destinations. For this reason, Nagtegaal recommends going through your policy with a fine-tooth comb to determine exactly what is included and what is excluded.

Most travel insurance offerings cover includes emergency medical expenses, hospital cash benefit per day, personal accident cover in the event of death or permanent disability, emergency travel and accommodation, legal assistance and personal liability cover, among others. However not all policies are the same and adds that various types of travel insurance are available depending on your needs. These include:

Business Insurance: If you’re travelling for business you would fall into one of two categories. Business administrative insurance for people who are typically travelling to a meeting, or business industrial insurance if you are travelling to perform a service or some sort of manual labour.  This type of insurance generally provides cover for aspects like delayed or cancelled flights, lost passports and medical cover.

Senior citizen travel insurance: For those over 70, for example, this insurance covers things like medical expenses, a visit from a family member if necessary, missed flights or cancellations and lost or delayed luggage.

Student travel insurance: This type of insurance is for younger people travelling for work or leisure and includes cover for emergency medical costs, injury or damage to a third person or their property, cancellation of an entire trip and missed flights.

It’s Time to Travel! Insurance Tips for a Safe Vacation

20 March 2018 By admin Leave a Comment

Travel is a special gift to give to yourself and your family, and can do wonders for mental and physical health. But lack of proper preparation can totally derail a perfectly planned vacation. Once you’ve made it away, definitely spend time decompressing, but do remember to be aware of the usual ways to become ill or injured on vacation so you can do your best to avoid them.

Things to Do Ahead of Time to Stay Healthy

  • Check in with your doctor to find out if your vacation destination requires you to be vaccinated ahead of time. Common vaccinations include those against typhoid, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, cholera, yellow fever, rabies, and influenza. Your doctor can also help with advice on avoiding infections such as Japanese encephalitis, cholera and traveller’s diarrhea.
  • Pack a travel health kit. Hopefully all it does is take up space in your suitcase, but if you end up needing it, you’ll be grateful you have it. This Government of Canada page has a comprehensive list of items to bring, which includes first aid supplies, medications and additional items such as water purification tablets or a filter, sunscreen and ear plugs. It is also recommended you carry a card with the contact information of a friend or family member at home, the name of your health care provider, your travel insurance information and where you are staying.

Things To Do While at Your Vacation Destination to Avoid Illness

  • Keep your hands clean. This is by far the best way to avoid illness. Wash thoroughly with soap and water as much as possible for at least 20 seconds, and don’t forget between your fingers and under your nails. Keep a healthy supply of hand sanitizer and hand wipes with you at all times, too, for when there isn’t a sink available.
  • Stay away from tap water and stick with bottled water when traveling in areas such as Mexico, South America, Asia (although Brunei, Israel, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and Singapore all have safe water) and Africa. Illnesses that can be found in bad water include typhoid, hepatitis A, cholera, and traveler’s diarrhea. To be very safe, even use bottled water when brushing your teeth and ask for drinks with no ice in them. If bottled water is unavailable, boil tap water for at least 60 seconds before drinking.
  • Watch what you eat. Be wary of uncooked foods such as salads, and although it’s very tempting, it’s best to avoid food from street vendors as well.
  • Be very careful in the sun. A sunburn can really derail a vacation, plus make you sick with headaches, the chills, fatigue, and, yes, pain. Use a waterproof sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and apply often.
  • Also take care to regulate your body heat. Those of us from Canada can forget just how hot others countries can become. It’s imperative to protect your head from the sun with a hat at all times, wear loose, light-colored clothing and stay hydrated by drinking lots of (bottled) water.
  • Insect repellant is also a must. Mosquitoes pass along illnesses such as dengue fever, malaria, and the Zika virus, and ticks, fleas or flies can also pass along diseases.

Tips for specialist travel insurance for over 70s

22 February 2018 By admin Leave a Comment

Travelling the world can be one of the most fulfilling aspects of later life. When you have the time, freedom and means to experience new places, there should be nothing to stop you taking the trips you may have always imagined.

Even if you have a pre-existing medical condition or disability, here at Free Spirit we believe age should be no barrier to travel, which is why we specialise in providing medical travel insurance for people over the age of 70, in fact, people of any age.

With specialist travel insurance tailored to your age and any existing conditions or disabilities you may have, you can jet off abroad with peace of mind and enjoy your holiday to the fullest.

Here are our top tips on finding medical travel insurance when you’re over 70 years of age.

Planning more than one trip? Multi-trip travel insurance could be better value

It’s wonderful having extended periods of time to dedicate to travel, which is why retirement is such a perfect opportunity to plan those overseas adventures. You could find yourself planning more than one holiday at once, or you may be looking to visit friends and family who live abroad, as well as taking a separate trip elsewhere.

If so, don’t forget that it may be cheaper to opt for Annual Multi-trip specialist travel insurance. As long as your trips all fall within the period of 12 months and you are planning to return home between each one, you can take as many holidays/trips as you like. Our Multi-trip travel insurance also covers most pre-existing medical conditions or disabilities.

The only other main caveat* is the number of days we can insure you to travel for. But don’t worry, you can still plan that month-long trip. Duration of each holiday/trip depends on the level of cover you go for – with our ‘Super’ cover each trip can last up to 31 days and with our ‘Super Duper’ cover, each one can last up to 45 days.

Please note, when you purchase an Annual Multi-trip policy, your cover will start on a date of your choice, provided it no more than 31 days in advance. If you have already booked your trip, we recommend starting the policy immediately to ensure you are covered for cancellation.
